The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a whirlwind of words, hilarity, tears, and exhilarating musical numbers. Six students and three teachers converge on the edge of a legendary bee in order to decide this year’s winner. The imaginations of both spellers and adults come to life in this musical comedy full of dirty jokes, cheap jabs, and audience participation. Throughout the musical, the entire cast and audience will come to the realization that life is truly pandemonium!!

Spelling Bee will be performed in Chapin Auditorium.

Erasmo is a tragic romance written in verse that follows the life of a young girl named Hortensia, daughter of the wealthiest man in town, who is considered cursed by the people in her town due to her lopsided mouth.  Individuals with this “disfigurement” are considered to be slanderers who cannot keep secrets and, instead, repeat everything they hear.  Though Hortensia longs to be accepted by her fellow townspeople and to possibly find love, she is shunned.  Hortensia finally finds love in a field hand, Erasmo, who works on her father’s land.  Her parents and her only friend, Agalia, warn her that love could never work between a poor man and a rich woman, like herself, and that he is probably unfaithful.  While Hortensia starts suspecting Erasmo, murders start occurring daily in the town.  Characters then set on an emotional journey to uncover the truth and are very surprised at what they find.

Erasmo will be held on March 29th at 7:30pm, March 30th at 6:30pm, and April 1st at 2pm in The New York Room in Chapin.

Project: Theatre presents a Victorian adaptation of this classic Shakespearean play. Four mismatched lovers lost in a forest, a band of would-be actors rehearsing a play, and two factions of mischievous fairies come together one midsummer’s night to create the ideal romantic comedy. A series of mishaps, magic potions, mistaken identities, declarations of love, duels, catfights, and a lion are all that stand between the characters and their happy ending.

Come see Project Theatre’s Annual Presentation of “The Vagina Monologues”!

Performances will be held on 2/10 at 5pm and 9pm, as well as 2/11 at 2pm in Chapin Auditorium. A free talkback and refreshments will follow the Saturday afternoon performance. Come discuss the show and issues related to it with the cast and crew! Professor Jaclyn Pryor of the Gender Studies Department will facilitate the dialogue.

Tickets will be sold in Blanchard the two weeks leading up to the show from 12-2pm and 5-7pm, as well as at the door. Tickets cost $3 for MHC students, $5 for the general public. All proceeds will benefit Womanshelter/Compañeras in Holyoke:

Womanshelter/Compañeras is dedicated to assisting, supporting, and empowering those whose lives are affected by battering and abuse. Founded in 1980 as a grassroots collective, the organization has sheltered more than 2,000 women and children and assisted 30,000 others through community-based support programs.

The reading will be followed by a playwriting discussion with David K Barnes, actor, director, and self-taught author of 9 directed and performed plays, two of which performed to great praise at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Take advantage of the chance to have a good laugh and discuss playwriting and the role of theatre in the modern world with your fellow students and this experienced British playwright.

The Timothy Stage Reading and Discussion is a Project:Theatre supported and funded event.

(Not) a Metaphor is a student-written work that focuses on the plight of two characters as they attempt to create their futures. All alone in a classroom with a test that will decide the rest of their lives, the two embark on a journey of hilarious and surprising self discovery in the form of a plot twist that will make audiences gasp for centuries to come. This tragicomedy is filled with theatre jokes, slapstick humor, and most importantly, an unprecedented sense of cliché.

24 hours to write, rehearse, and put up six original plays. What else could it be but the 24 Hour Play Festival?

On Saturday night, six students will gather to begin the writing process. At 5 AM scripts are due so the cold reading process can begin. Rehearsals begin at 7 AM and run through the day. Finally, at 8 PM the plays will be presented and everyone will be sent home to catch up on lost shut eye.
